A daily record of gratitude; from quilting to photography to a mix of technology, books, movies and the musings of life!

Welcome to my Blog of my daily gratitude and photo of the day!

Since January 1, 2012, my goal is to write a daily sentence or two (or paragraph or two) about gratitude of the day and to include one photo (at least) that I took that day (but will add others from time to time). It has definitely been a challenge most days throughout the past eight years, and welcomed the challenge again this year - 2020 - Covid and all. I hope you will continue the ride with me!

#Celebrating Others with Ervin Zimmerman of Hinkletown Sewing - #1 Bernina Dealership in the United States

Just like a fine automobile, investing in a good sewing machine is tantamount to driving it many miles and years. Last December I bought a Bernina 570 sewing machine from Hinkletown Sewing in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. For the last year, I've "pinky swore" that I would only sew with this machine (along with Carrie Casto and Mary Nielsen who also bought this machine), so we could really get to know our machines; it's tempo, sounds and capabilities.

Fast forward to today when I took my machine in for its one year check-up/clean-up/oiled-up (traveled with bee-mates; Karen Todd, Susie Stevenson and Deb Hoppe), and learned that my machine is still in great shape (of course it is!), and that I've put on 1,003,609 stitches to date!

But I wanted to learn more about this business that has been run by this Mennonite family for over 60 years on a 43 acre spread in the farmlands of Eastern, PA. So I spoke with the patriarch of the family, Ervin Zimmerman, who at 68 is sharp as a tack and loves to please his customers.

Ervin noted that the sewing business was started by his father, Ezra, in the 1950's selling Singer Sewing Machines, and then moved his family to the location they are in now in 1966, and began selling Bernina Sewing Machines. Through the years, the business grew and was passed down to Ervin and his family which includes his wife, Elle Mae, eight children, and now three grandchildren. It's truly a family affair, and everyone knows everything about the business (selling/repairing/teaching).

When I asked Ervin what he likes best about the business, he said he loves all his customers and servicing machines (and they can service any make and brand to boot!).

But what is really fascinating about Ervin and Hinkletown Sewing is that they have run a viable business to a tune of being the number one dealership of Bernina Sewing Machines in the United States, and possibly the world, without a website, computer or any social media. How can they do that you may ask?  Well, I had to. Ervin maintained that it's their impeccable work ethic, attention to detail while repairing machines and their overall superior service that keeps bringing customers back to their charming location. (They also farm corn and alfalfa and have dairy heifers that need tending to daily). When I queried whether or not they do any advertising, Ervin said he puts in advertisements in the local papers to Mennonites/Amish folk. And, he claimed that 80% of his business comes from a 50 mile radius of Elphrata.

Lastly, this man who puts his family first and who is inspired by the Bible (mostly New Testament) has never flown in an airplane and lives with very few "modern conveniences" (no TV, radio, computer), has shown that success comes in many forms, maybe even a little "old fashioned" according to some, but still realizing that building solid relationships are still important to maintain 'success.'

Dark Nights - Season of Lights

These "shorty" days (meaning less daylight) has a silver lining...pretty lights all aglow in many places. The dark ink colored skies even make it seem like it's colder outside, but it is a clear view in any direction you look. Let's enjoy the clear nights with all the pretty fashioned season of lights in your home, your neighborhood and the places you visit most often.

2018 Guild Holiday Party In the Books!

I believe a good time was had by all at my quilt guild's annual Holiday/Christmas Party. It's a potluck, and anything goes food wise, from appetizers to desserts and everything in-between. Thankfully, as I write this post, I am full from all the tasty food everyone brought to share. And, it's always great night to catch up with our guild-mates and have some fun with our 12.5" block swap as seen in my first photo. If you made a block, or two or three, that's how many you go home with. It's always fun to see all the different holiday blocks the members make and swap and a great cap to the evening festivities.

Unexpected Knitted Socks

Some of the best gifts received are those that are totally unexpected. Yesterday I received a box sent by Bee-mate, Mary Nielsen, who lives in Florida, of gifts for our entire bee that we will exchange later this month. Once I let her know the box arrived safely, she inquired whether or not I opened it. I replied, "no", and she encouraged me to open it since there was "something" in the box for me.

Lo and behold, right on top was a hand-knitted pair of blue socks (and a lollipop) that Mary made especially for me! I am thrilled to have a pair knitted by Mary, and thankful beyond measure of these comfy and fit perfectly pair of socks. I sincerely appreciate all those who knit because I'm not good at it. I've tried to knit on several occasion (with Mary as my instructor) and get all mixed up with purls and knits and counting stitches and such. I've decided to stick to quilting...

Mixing it Up!

The season of baking (and cooking) is definitely upon us, and I have to give credit where credit is due to my mixer. I never had a big heavy duty counter-top mixer, rather a small hand-held one that I got as a wedding shower gift in 1987. I have certainly put it through the paces over the years, and want to give a shout of thanks to my cousin Maryjo Oliver (I remembered the gift giver for this one!), for showering me with this gift that keeps on ticking! No one would have ever thought this mixer would last 31 years, but it certainly has, and I am thankful for its every use, and helping me back delicious cookies and cakes!

And I am remiss in mentioning the passing of George H.W. Bush...may he Rest In Peace...

Cookies Cookies Cookies

They are one of my favorite things during the holidays, and chocolate chip cookies anytime!

So when one of the neighbors mentioned we live in a great neighborhood and it’s wonderful that we can get together for our annual cookie exchange and party, I couldn’t agree more.

The ladies outdid themselves in all the cookies on the table in both presentations and tastiness. And a big shout of thanks to our hostess this year, Mary Kay Carlo! Not only did she have an awesome spread of great food, her entire house is wonderfully decorated. This afternoon was simply magical in celebrating the season with the "Harcourt" ladies (a couple moved off the street but are always welcome back "home").

And when I returned home (all of two doors), I made a pot of tea and ate some cookies...Who could resist?

31 Year Old Woolworth Tea Towel

I recently pulled out a "new" tea towel to begin its rotation in the daily use towel drawer, a wedding shower gift from 1987. It’s almost 32 years old and in pristine condition since it’s never been used, and believe it or not, still had the price tag on from Woolworth’s. I’m thankful to whoever gave it to us so long ago, and wish I could remember who did. I’d like to thank them all over again!

#CelebratingOthers with Make-Up Artist - Helene Kirby

Raise your hand if you ever had a make-over? Believe it or not, I never had one until November 17th, the weekend of Special Love's Parent Get-Away Weekend. I typically shy away from the "pampering", but for some reason, I moseyed into the area where the make-up artists were working their magic on several of the ladies attending the weekend, and making them pretty, and I thought, what the heck and walked in...

One of the greeters, Chrissy, gave me a big hug and introduced me to Helene, age 60, and we hit it off right away. I explained that I'm not much, if at all, a make-up wearing gal, so she patiently worked my entire face (explaining along the way) on how the products she was using work on each face. Once ensconced in her chair (or "lair"), the enchantment of it all was intoxicating, even for this gal that wears only blush and lipsmaker (like chapstick). I figured she had some interesting stories and so I interviewed her that same evening (disco night).

Helene has been doing make-up for about 25 years and is currently a "freelancer" with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. She even mentioned that we all must take care of our "aging skin", moisturizing and hydrating and wearing lots of sunscreen. What great advice for all!

But before she got into the make-up artistry, Helene "grew up" working for the Arena Stage and Washington Opera in administrative capacities. She was born and raised in Maryland (Bethesda, Wheaton, Rockville areas), and is the baby of three siblings. Helene loved working for the Opera and the shows because there were lots of perks associated with the job, but the retail world was "calling" her back (she also gigged as a personal shopper for a large department store). When the make-up counter girls watched Helene work so hard as a personal shopper, they enticed her to try her hand at the cosmetic counter...a move she does not regret!

She confided that she fell in love with the industry, her customer base and the fact she felt she could make a difference in her customer's life. She is cherished by many because she recognized everyone she worked with really needed to be listened to; and Helene rose to be that confidant (think; a good bartender). She listened and laughed and cried with her customers, despite if they ever bought one item from her booth. Well, guess what? Those same folks came back and back and eventually did buy, and that made "everyone" happy!

Helene says her co-workers Jody and Cheryl really taught her the ropes to the industry and is forever grateful that they took her under their wings. In addition, she loves to make someone "pretty", even for a moment, or that day. She knows they walk away glowing...as they should, right?

I loved Helene's response to; "what makes you tick?". She responded the ying and yang of it all, in that, she loves to bring balance to her life. Interestingly enough, she said she is a caregiver and helper, yet is a diva. Balance....

Lastly, Helene mentioned that people who change the course of history inspires her to no end (Doctors without Borders, Princess Di, and many others doing good work for the world).

I think Helene was the perfect match for my very first make-over! And thrilled that I was interested in her craft! She is an artist, bar none!

Quilt/Tablecloth for Author Richard Morris's Legacy

I recently finished a commissioned quilt for NeedleOnFull that, in reality, is a two-fer. Meaning, this quilt can be used as a quilt; or what my client actually intended it to be, a "tablecloth" for when she sells (or directs potential buyers to on-line book stores) the books her husband, Richard Morris, had written through the years (he passed away in 2017). It was quite fun to design the setting so when the quilt is draped over a table, the books are right-side up, and the same on the other side of the table. But, this quilt can easily be used to snuggle on the sofa to watch TV as well. And that is where the beauty lies; in the multi-purpose use - especially this particular quilt.

If you are curious as me on the Richard Morris books, here is the link to check them out:

31 Day Blogpost Challenge

I've decided to join Cheryl Sleboda's challenge to write a post every day in December. I started on December 2nd, but thankfully, posted on December 1st. So, since I’m mostly a daily blogger, with "built in" days off, this means no days off and I will write straight through to the new year!

Right now there are about 25 others doing it too, see them check out muppin.com

Maybe it will be fun to check and see other fun bloggers out there doing their thing every single day!

December Haiku

I am rather enjoying writing up a Haiku every now and then, so here's my stab at my December Haiku:

December delight

Candles burning, lights twinkling

Wrapped in love and joy.

Simple but true as we we march into the season of light. With some temperate weather, it seems like folks are decorating the outdoors and casting off the dark skies of December.

#Celebrating Others turning the B-I-G 60 with Bill Tomoff (and Identical Twin, Don Tomoff)

Today marks six decades of running around the sun...with passion, commitment and dedication in anything Bill Tomoff digs his heels into! I was lucky enough to have met him as a young buck of 26 years of age, and witness his spirit and devotion with his work, our marriage two years later, and his unwavering support of his/our two children. Kindness reigns supreme in his world, and that sets him on a trajectory of helping others and learning as much as he can every day. (I can't keep up!)

"Be true to yourself" is aptly fitting on how Bill lives and loves his life, and he's full steam ahead with the 61st lap that started today!  I could not be more proud of this man, and love him to the moon and back with the same passion he shows me on a daily basis.

So a huge shout of a Very Happy Birthday on this milestone of 60! Sto Lat! (Polish greeting that means may you live to 100 years old!).

And let's not forget, a very Happy Birthday to Don Tomoff too! They are super "twinny" and close; which means that they talk multiple times a day starting about 6:30am; have the same mannerisms, are both CPA's (passed the exact same parts back in the day) and have "woo-woo" twin moments quite a bit (like dressing exactly alike but never knew what the other one was going to wear). They are the funnest accountants in America and co-founders of TwinzTalk!

Full Circle Quilt Moment

This past weekend I traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to visit family and friends. I really wanted to spend some time each day there (four days), visiting my 87 year old mother in her nursing home. It was a chance for me to give my sisters, who live in the area, a break in their visiting routines. A win-win for all!

Typically, my Mom is quite happy despite the debilitating dementia riddling her mind. However, I/we make the best of each visit, as so many can attest to with elderly loved ones, and this visit was no exception.

The day I left, I made a point to visit one last time before heading to the airport. While my mom was in the all-purpose room and “watching” TV (college football was on at the time), she was fidgeting and not “engaging” too much at all. I continued to talk and tried to rattle some vestiges of a long-ago memory (mostly from her childhood), with limited success. I then ran down to her room to retrieve her baby doll and her activity/sensory blanket to see if those items would “help” with her memory bank.

As I entered her room, I stopped dead in my tracks because when I looked over at her bed, it was graced with a quilt I made for her and my Dad in 1990. It was one of the first full size quilts I made, and I almost burst into tears seeing it, lovingly worn, in this setting. During the past six years that she has lived in this nursing home, I don’t ever recall seeing this quilt on her bed, rather mostly folded up and placed on the top shelf in the closet.

As any quilter knows, we love to “pet” fabric, and so I marched right up to it and ran my hand across this well-worn and loved quilt. I was amazed that it was so faded; and tried not to look at my “not-so-perfect” hand quilting (I was still a newbie with less than two years of quilting experience at the time the quilt was started and finished). But I knew my parents loved this quilt, and it’s one of the few items that my Mom has in her room besides family photographs and her clothing.

It is “quilting from the heart”…and a full circle quilt moment for sure.

Nov End

It’s the end of November and it seems every where you look the holiday season has "snuck" up on us and it’s full steam ahead. Before it gets too crazy (weather mostly), I’m thankful to have gotten in a trip to visit with my Mom, along family and friends on a whirlwind few days here in Cleveland.

My photos give a glimpse into one outstanding day (I’ll even discount the snow and ice...)

A "Good Friend"

When your Mom calls you a "good friend", you take it. Especially if that mom is dealing with dementia and is not sure about a lot of things. At least I’m now a "good friend", even though I’m her eldest daughter.

Playing on the Phone vs. Reading?

You’ve got to love booking a trip using points. Usually, I tend to build them up but never use them, until now. About two months ago, Southwest was running a great "special" on many flights. For giggles and grins, I decided to book a "special" to Cleveland, Ohio, to visit my mom and family and friends in the area. But instead of paying with a credit card, I threw caution to the wind, and pushed the "points" button. Thankfully, I had plenty of points on the books to make it happen. The only "thing" I had to pay was $11 in tax to Uncle Sam.

So, while at the airport, I’m wrestling with playing on the phone (it’s winning as I write this blogpost) or read. I must finish the book to pass it along, so we will see if I crack it open while flying the friendly skies...fingers crossed that I do!

300,000,000 to the Red Planet

Big news today in space. The Insight journey to Mars has landed and now the fun shall begin with the gathering of data once the instruments are deployed from the unmanned spacecraft. How cool is this? I think super fantastic, really, and it truly boggles the mind for anything to travel 300 million miles and reach its final destination, practically unscathed! That in itself is quite a miracle I'd say.

So a HUGE congratulations is in order and must be "screamed from the rooftops" to all (thousands) of NASA's employees and contractors who made today possible with this unbelievable Red Planet destination. Somehow, I think our lives will forever be changed now that "we've gone beyond our wildest dreams" in getting to Mars, and thankfully, the approximately seven minutes of nail biting to land the Insight is now in the rear view mirror. I heard on the radio that in those almost seven minutes, the spacecraft had to go from traveling at 12, 000 MPH to ZERO to land. That is some marvelous technology and a whole lot of brain power to actually make this whole scenario happen, and with great and happy results for the whole Earth to see and be a witness to a slice of "world" history.

Another Heart Found Me!

Or am I finding hearts? I definitely don't seek them out, but they surely seem to "pop" up when I least expect them to. I suspect this "tab" was on a large plastic bag of some sort; but I am just guessing. It was in my son's room, and when I started to vacuum the carpet, simply lying there in plain sight ready to be sucked up. Wow! (It probably should have been thrown out a long time ago!).

*Bonus* Blind Hanger-Upper in the House

I am/we are so thankful for my brother in law, Jerry Kocan, in helping us with some home updating with the installation of five sets of blinds this holiday weekend. He likes to be busy, and we had boxes of blinds that "needed" to be installed. Let’s face it, a match made in Crofton.

My photo is of Jerry with a double set install he "tackled" on two back windows. The 2" cordless blinds look great (Levelor).

BSoleille! Thank you, Jerry, for a job well done!
