Did you know that a USSF soccer referee needs to be tested every year on the Laws of the “beautiful” game? It keeps everyone on their toes, and it’s good for all levels of play: from the wee youth age groups to the FIFA World Cup games. This past weekend, about 60 Maryland referees met for our yearly recertification and 5 hours of classroom discussion.
In 2019, there have been more law changes than over 30 years. Our games good get very interesting, and watching EPL or MLS (and as with the women’s World Cup), the laws will change some of the play, hopefully for the betterment of each game. So don’t be surprised if and when you may see some things in the game that are different from before (i.e., goal kicks do not have to pass over the 18 yard line).
With the 2020 badge, classroom recertification and on-line testing and modules completed, I’m looking forward to another year of great soccer on the pitch! And doubly thankful that I can run and blow my whistle!
BSoleille!
